Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Dental Implant Sunnyvale

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Dental Implant Sunnyvale

After losing a tooth, or several, many patients find that the best option for replacing them is with a dental implant-supported prosthesis (i.e., crown, bridge, or denture). Dental implants are small posts made from biocompatible titanium, and after they’re inserted, your jawbone heals by fusing to their surfaces.

Though they are often the optimal solution, you may still have questions about dental implants, and your dentist can answer them more extensively during your initial consultation.

Do implants get cavities?

A cavity is a hole in your natural tooth structure caused by tooth decay. The cavity and the preceding decay are the result of excessive oral bacteria accumulating on your teeth and gums.

Because an implant and restoration are not made from natural tooth structure, they won’t be susceptible to cavities; however, decay in nearby teeth can still threaten your long-term oral health and the success of your implants.

Will my restoration stain, like natural teeth?

In addition to being cavity-resistant, dental implant restorations are also highly stain resistant. The porcelain used to create modern crowns, bridges, and dentures is designed specifically to mimic your healthy, natural, blemish-free teeth.

To keep your replacement teeth and the rest of your smile bright and beautiful, be sure to attend a dental checkup and cleaning appointment at least once every six months.

Can I still get gum disease after I get an implant?

Even though your dental implant isn’t biological, the periodontal tissues and jawbone structure that support it still are. These tissues and underlying jawbone can still develop periodontal disease, or gum disease, if you don’t maintain excellent hygiene and a regular schedule of visits to your dentist.
