Bitten Tongue and Lip – Dental Emergency Sunnyvale, CA

Bitten Tongue and Lip – Dental Emergency Sunnyvale, CA
bitten lip sunnyvale dental emergencyIt is not unusual to occasionally experience an inadvertent bite of the lip or tongue. This may occur more frequently in small children. Some people with medical conditions such as epilepsy may bite themselves while having a seizure. Lip and tongue bites can also occur while chewing, while numb from dental anesthesia, during a traumatic accident, or while sleeping. Tongue and lip bite injuries that require professional attention may be treated at our Sunnyvale Dental Emergency practice.   We will gently assess your injury and advise you if any further treatment is needed.

Does a lip or tongue bite always require medical attention?

Many accidental tongue or lip bites are minor and do not require medical attention. They may heal on their own within a couple of days. For more serious bites, Sunnyvale emergency dentist Dr. Gupta can be consulted. Some bitten tongue or lip accidents are accompanied by a tooth being knocked out. This true dental emergency requires a different type of treatment.

How do you treat a lip or tongue bite?

If bleeding is present, a clean towel or cloth can be used to place pressure over the injury to control bleeding. If the bleeding cannot be controlled the Sunnyvale Dental Emergency office can be consulted. Once bleeding has stopped, cold food and beverages like ice or popsicles may make the area feel more comfortable. During the time of healing, spicy, acidic or other foods that can cause irritation should be avoided.  In the following days warm salt water rinses may make the area feel better.

Where can I go to treat a lip or tongue bite injury?

The Sunnyvale Dental Care Emergency clinic is available to treat injuries to the tongue or lip caused by bites. Sunnyvale emergency dentist Dr. Gupta will assess the wound and determine whether or not sutures are needed. Injuries that are long or deep may require sutures, cauterization or other treatment.  Severe lacerations may be referred to a hospital for further treatment.

What are signs of an infected lip or tongue?

Signs of infection may include swelling, fever, increased pain, redness, or the presence of puss. The Sunnyvale Dental Care Emergency center should be called if you suspect that you are experiencing healing complications including infection. An antibiotic may be prescribed.

How can I avoid an accidental lip or tongue bite injury?

  • Keep your shoes tied
  • Wear athletic mouth protection while playing sports
  • Avoid opening items with your teeth
  • Keep sharp objects away from your mouth
  • Keep walk ways clear of debris
