Implant Retained Dentures

Implant Retained Dentures

What are Implants?

An implant is a thin titanium rod that is inserted into your jawbone in place of a missing tooth root. It is used as a secure fixed base for dentures. Over time the implant integrates with the bone tissue in your jaw and functions just like a natural tooth root. You must have healthy gums and a thick enough jawbone to be able to have implants fitted.

What are Implant Retained Dentures?

There are a variety of reasons why people may not be able to wear a traditional removable denture.

Lower jaw: Losing your teeth leads to bone loss if they are not replaced. If a substantial amount of bone loss occurs, the lower jawbone may not be able to support a denture. Inserting two implants into the lower jawbone provides a solid foundation for a denture that otherwise a patient may not have been able to wear.

Upper jaw: Some people may not be able to wear traditional upper dentures because their gag reflex is oversensitive. Having upper implants allows the size of the denture base to be reduced and made into an arch shape, rather than occupying the entire palate. What are the Advantages of Implant Retained Dentures?
  • They are much more secure and comfortable than traditional removable dentures.
  • You won’t even feel like you’re wearing dentures.
  • Your ability to eat and speak will be greatly improved.
  • Implants prevent the bone loss that occurs when you have missing teeth, allowing your facial structure to be maintained.
  • The lip support provided by implants will reduce the amount of wrinkles you get around your mouth.
When are Mini-Implants Used? Mini-implants are used when traditional implants are not suitable, especially if the patient’s jawbone is not thick enough to support normal implants. There are lots of advantages of mini-implants:
  • 4 mini-implants are inserted instead of 2 larger ones. The procedure is generally non-invasive and doesn’t require the gums to be cut open.
  • The treatment can be performed under local anesthetic.
  • The procedure and recovery time are quicker than with traditional implants.
  • They are less expensive than normal implants.
